Words we need to hear more often...

I've mentioned before that I am a fan of clever word smithing and love to read authors that are exceptional at it.   Patrick Rothfuss is one such example.   The King Killer Chronicles is a masterful example of a well written story and is chocked full of fun terms and phrases that are so quotable it carries a certain Douglas Adams.....esq feel.   Part of Rothfuss' charm is his habit of combining words in new and interesting ways or utilizing words that have long since gone out of style. This is a trend that I would like to see more of.   There are some words and phrases that provide such a colorful images that it would be a crime to let them retire into a lexicographical cemetery. Testicular Fortitude - I was introduced to this wonderful term in The Name of the Wind by the aforementioned Patrick Rothfuss   and I've only been able to use in once since then. Poppycock –What a wonderful word!   I rarely get to enjoy myself so much while yelling bullshit.   F

Crying, crying...laughing

This is a guest post... Nothing helps.   I cry less than at first.   It's been a year, shouldn't something change? I know crying won't bring him back…stupid to think that it would.   I can't help it. Most days I can deal.   I make my to do list and move. I don't necessarily move in the direction that I planned, but I plan. Where is my list? I don't know but I stay busy. I still cry.   I cry a lot in my car.   Especially when the music is playing.   I don't even drive far. Moving on with my life and keeping busy...   Is that dealing?   I don't feel any different. I am just more busy, sometimes. Many things I do while I'm "busy" are the same things I did when he was here.   He didn't do the busy stuff.   He did the projects and fix-its and the building and many of the "together things" like driving and helping and leading. It's the alone times, like now, that make me cry.   I didn't plan it…it

Memory

I sit here contemplating the complexities of a single night’s misadventure. Memories swirl in a whirlwind of loud music, alcohol, and heightened emotions that came to a close on the bed of a stranger I felt I knew for years. I can’t help thinking back to the moment, thinking what could have been done differently, wondering what she is thinking, how I will approach the future encounters. If I could just talk to her once more so that I can clarify things… because there is one memory I cannot grasp, something that NEEDS to be asked: “Did all of that really happen while we were watching The Dark Crystal?” -FCJ

I Have Been Reported to the FBI (by a crazy old man)

As some of you may know, I work for a bank. We have some fairly strict guidelines for our branch opening procedures, when and if one can be in our parking lot in the morning (mainly for safety reasons). One of our rules involves not entering the location until a designated person has completed a walk-through of the branch and putting up an "all clear" signal. Because of this, and the fact that I usually arrive 30-45 minutes early to beat traffic and in case of traffic, I tend to park in the parking lot next door and listen to the radio, eat my breakfast, talk to myself, surf the internet, etc... This has become a routine for the past months and until now I have not come across any issues from anyone. Today was a little bit different... After being parked for ~20 minutes, eating my breakfast, and listening to the radio, I turn on my car to drive over to my parking lot (assuming the branch should be open by now). AS I put my car in reverse a white mid 90s SUV pulls up behin

LOTR (Lord of the Rings) vs Star Wars

Had a request to post this, an email between myself and a friend (coworker) of mine. It is rather brief without much back and forth, I hope that some will add their own thoughts and ideas... Worker#2 ... So what's your opinion on Star Wars Vs. LOTR? What is better to you ? FCJ: ... As for Star Wars Vs LOTR... it's not really a fair comparison. The original Star Wars were ahead of their time, epic in the terms of movie production and special effects that were available for their time. Acting was terrible and the story line a little thin with not a lot fully explained unless you read the large number of books to follow. I have to admit I love the Ewoks, wish I could move things with my mind, and always thought Princess Leia was hot. LOTR on the other hand, loved the books and movies, love The Hobbit, and I can really get wrapped into his world. I have a profound respect for Tolkien's work as he not only created the ideas for the worlds and the different characters (s
